What it is

What is Intensive Outpatient Program?

Intensive Outpatient is a structured treatment program at ASAM Level 2.1 — typically 9 to 19 hours of clinical programming per week, delivered across three to five days. It's the right level of care for people who need more than weekly therapy, but who can safely live at home and keep up with the rest of their life.

At Renew Path, IOP is the bridge between the intensity of PHP and the long-term sustainability of outpatient care. Most clients spend 8 to 12 weeks in IOP, but the timeline is yours — built around clinical progress, not arbitrary days.

Frequently asked

Questions, answered.

How long does IOP last?
Typically 8 to 12 weeks, but length is driven by clinical progress, not a fixed timeline.
Can I work or go to school during IOP?
Yes. IOP is specifically designed to fit around employment, school, and family commitments.
How is IOP different from PHP?
PHP is full-day programming, 5–6 days a week. IOP is 3–5 half-days. PHP is more intensive; IOP is more sustainable for clients who can stabilize at that level.
Do I have to be in recovery from substances to attend?
No. We have IOP tracks for substance use, mental health, and co-occurring conditions.
Will my insurance cover IOP?
Most major commercial insurers cover IOP. Verify your benefits in 60 seconds.
